Today's video is about a different take on using videoblogs. In the videoblogging group, we're discussing what a videoblog should be. Different camps are forming. Short or long? "like TV" or completely "not like TV". Really, it's all correct depending ... [Read More]

My cousin has a similar setup. He built a custom computer that is designed to fit in his home theater cabinet. He has about half a terabyte of hard drive storage in his basement and has it hooked up to this computer/PVR. His entire DVD collection and music collection is stored on these drives, and he can also record directly off the TV, TiVo style. So, basically all his media is on-demand all the time. He can even switch his TV to computer-mode and surf the web from his living room -- uses a wireless mouse, wireless keyboard, and a remote control for all these functions. Its absolutely amazing, and all custom built.

There's a whole A/V-Home Theater culture out there that's doing this. Basically, they're hotrodding their living rooms. But a lot of the focus is on high qaulity television -- stuff like HDTV.

What Dan is doing, and probably other people too, seems less about picture quality and more about access to content. Channels and TV Networks are irrelevant in this model. Why should I have to go to ESPN for Sportscenter and Comedy Central for the Daily Show? Why can't I just aggregate it and watch when I want? And beyond that, what if there is great content on this blog or that blog? Well, I'll aggregate that too. And then, pretty soon, there may be some video bloggers competeing with "60 minutes" and other staples of network television. Not to say that Big Media will go away, but hopefully it won't be quite so big.

Interesting video blog.... look forward to seeing your next.

wow, I'm inspired. I'm buying a happauge WinTV card right away. Along with another 120gb drive for 60 hours of DVD quality video :-0

Man, you have so much cool stuff going on here! I've been a slave to my editing machine, living in a bubble.

Jay have you heard of INdTV - Al Gore's new television network? I applied for a job as one of their "digital correspondents" - who knows if I'll make the cut. But what I'd like to see happen on that network is ALL independent content, all the time. Harness videoblogs around themes, open this mother wide open. I know they are very interested in tapping the indie DV/blog/vlog community, and hopefully in envisioning a new/better/vox populi media.

I have been using video tuner cards for years & I build my own Media center pc's, but without the regular MS Media Center crap software because with other software you have more freedom to do what you want with your media that you record. I believe if I pay monthly for Sat tv service & I choose to tape it, then that is just what I am going to do, as long as I keep my recordings to myself & I do not do any thing else with it, but I do make dvd's for my own personal use. I have also build a small computer the size of a cd player which I take with me in my car & I then hook it up to my monitor & Amp in my car & I then hook up my external firewire drive which has all of my video & music on it & then that makes it possible for me to take my home media center at home with me into my car. That also has another plus to it,Iuse no car radio so the thiefs can't steal anything because everythig comes with me when I leave my car. I also want to ad a gps navigation system to it so I can also get driving directions. I can also do over head fly overs over the address where I am driving to with a software program that google makes called (Keyhole)which sales for $29.99, like the news does over Iraq & I also can surf the net using my wireless card or my blue tooth enabled cell phone, so I have a full working computer/media center in my car. Also later I want to ad VR optical glasses which will let me turn it also into a wearable computer(yeh I know, but I am a true computer geek), I also want to embed a wireless video camera, so I can tape while walking down the street or any situation and that is called a wearable camera. I also later want to ad video cams to my car so I can record while driving & that maybe great in accident situations or even video recording protection if you get stopped by the police, so then you have a recording of how he treated you. Well people there is all kinds of ways to use this Technology, so just experiment & do what you feel is right in yor gut as long as your responsible & not stupid & try to share or sale what you recorded & if you decide to share it, um people then (ENCRYPTION) is the word, but I do not record my video to share only for my personal use. Good luck people. Oh and with my small media center I use a external usb 2.0 tuner card capture device that sorta looks like a usb Key, also I use a free media center program called HTPC & they have a forsale version now & the name changed, but the old free HTPC version works fine for me and you can only download that at the Wayback website, I think the address is www.wayback.com (or) try to google (HTPC), but I am not sure. excuse the length I typed just wanted to help the beginners out a little bit, oh & frys Electronics at->(www.outpost.com) & (www.computergeeks.com) sales really good cheap tuner cards from about $29.00 on up and I bought one of the cheap ones and it works just fine, but try to buy one with an S-video,composite & regular cable line input on it, but the S-video input connection is what I use because it makes my recordings look so good that you cant tell the difference between the tv & my recorded content & another thing video files get big, so I use a prgram called Dr. DivX & a program called Auto GK to change my mpegs from the tuner card recordings to divX & they are clear as glass. Again good luck Fellow Cybernauts!
